A customization screen promises authorship
Customization asks the player to believe that a choice belongs to them. Numbers can support that promise, but visible change makes it easier to feel. Everything is Crab, Voidling Bound, and Pandora's Toybox attach authorship to bodies at three scales: an animal, a controllable creature, and a society.
The comparison matters because more visible change is not automatically better. The body has to keep explaining the rule after the novelty wears off.
Everything is Crab makes the run wear its history
A creature changes as it collects evolutions. The current body becomes a record of earlier choices and a rough prediction of how it might survive the ecosystem.
This can make a run memorable without requiring the player to recall every upgrade name. The problem arrives when a dramatic mutation and a large mechanical effect do not match.
Voidling Bound makes the body an instrument
Genes, attributes, parts, and evolution paths lead back to a creature the player controls directly. Customization is tested through movement, attacks, defense, and timing.
Direct control can deepen ownership, but it can also narrow the collection. Players may favor bodies that fit their existing habits instead of learning unfamiliar ones.
Pandora's Toybox moves authorship to a society
The player can observe named individuals or intervene in the civilization around them. The visible body is no longer one creature. It is a growing settlement with people, technology, conflict, and faith.
This wider scale can make restraint feel authored too. It also risks weakening attachment if the roguelite loop replaces societies before the player has time to understand them.
Visible change needs a readable consequence
A useful customization system lets the player point at a change and connect it to a different possibility. The creature reaches farther. The Voidling moves differently. The settlement follows a new pressure.
If the visible change cannot support that sentence, it may still be attractive, but it is not carrying much of the design. The menu remains the real source of truth.
