Everything is Crab Evolution and Pressure Reference

Creature combat in an open field in Everything Is Crab.
The open-field encounter keeps movement space and the current creature form in the same frame. Steam

A Darwin with many upgrades can still lack a route. Identify the missing job—food, movement, sustain, offense, terrain control, or boss readiness—before taking the next evolution, genetics choice, or pressure push.

The short version

The best next pick is usually the one that fixes the way the last run became unsafe. In Everything is Crab, that usually means one of eight jobs: food access, one main attack, movement, sustain, genetics opener, biome adaptation, pressure unlock plan, or boss readiness.

A large boss fight in Everything Is Crab.
The boss frame shows the larger threat that an evolution route eventually has to answer. Steam

Start with the failure, then use the table below. If two jobs are missing, repair survival first: food, movement, sustain, or terrain control. Damage comes after the creature can stay alive long enough to use it.

Mutation and Pressure Data Table

SystemWhat it changesRoute valueFailure risk
Cheek PouchFood storage and safer recovery windowsGood when deaths happen while crossing danger to eat. Treat it as route safety, not damage. If the build still lacks movement, stored food may only delay the same bad position.
TrunkA slower mixed attack with extra reachUseful when a run needs a main offense that can hit before crowded enemies fully collapse space. It can feel bad if physical and ability stats are both under-supported or the creature cannot kite.
StingerPoison route commitmentFits attrition runs that can survive long enough for poison value to matter.Bad as a panic pick when food, movement, or sustain is already failing.
Star enemiesMutation point opportunitiesWorth routing when the creature can safely take the fight and use the extra choice to tighten a plan. They become bait if the build takes an elite fight before it has recovery space.
GeneticsStarting character directionUse genetics to choose an opener: food-safe, movement-first, offense-first, sustain-first, social, or high-variance.Do not force a named gene into every run if the offered evolutions are solving a different problem.
CarcinisationHigher reward pressure with harsher enemy pressurePush it after the route already clears normal problems cleanly.Raising carcinisation and selective pressure together makes it harder to know which layer broke.
Pressure 6Random biome starts and route adaptability pressureA good checkpoint for testing whether the opener works outside a comfortable map.Rigid builds that need one terrain, one food pattern, or one early evolution often fail here.
Pressure 15+Level-up health scaling becomes less generous in the current 1.1 rulesPlan more deliberately around sustain, food safety, and clean fights before pushing late pressure.Builds that coast on incidental level-up health can suddenly feel much thinner.
Pressure 20Endgame route targetPush it after the same plan already works at lower pressure. It is not a first-clear goal. Pushing too early exposes several unfinished jobs at once.

Pressure Unlock Ladder

Version 1.1 moved several evolution unlocks into pressure progression. Pressure is therefore more than a difficulty slider: each milestone can add another route tool. Learn the new layer before moving up again.

MilestoneUnlockRoute decision
Pressure 2Hibernation and Burrower unlock earlier than beforeBuild defensive recovery and a route escape before adding more offensive greed.
Pressure 3Lick Wounds enters the route as a limited self-heal ultimateUse it to stabilize runs that lose to stacked chip damage, not to justify bad terrain fights.
Pressure 4Overwhelm unlock signalCheck whether the build can convert pressure into faster fight control.
Pressure 6Tracker unlock and random biome startsTest whether the route can identify alpha enemies, adapt terrain, and survive without a perfect opener.
Pressure 7-9Fin, Fibroblasts, and Ambush unlock signalsRevisit water movement, sustain, and opening burst after each unlock instead of changing everything at once.
Pressure 11Constriction unlock signalOnly evaluate it after the route has stable food and boss space; otherwise the test is noisy.
Pressure 15+Level-up health becomes less automaticUse safer pathing and recovery choices. Do not assume leveling alone will carry late pressure.

Genetics Opener Sanity Check

Genetics are starting characters, so judge them by the first route problem they solve. If a genetics opener does not help the first ten minutes become safer or more coherent, it is probably a style pick rather than a route pick.

Opener typeTake it whenSkip it when
Food-safe openerYour deaths happen while eating, crossing to food, or recovering after small hits. The run already has reliable food and needs a real attack plan.
Movement openerSnow, sand, water, clutter, or boss arenas keep deciding the run before damage matters. You can already reposition and the problem is slow kills.
Offense openerEnemies survive long enough to surround you even when pathing is clean. You are taking hits because the route has no escape or recovery.
Sustain openerGood routes collapse from repeated small hits, chip damage, or long fights. The run is dying instantly from bad terrain choices.
Social or ally openerYou want charmed allies, target marking, or safer map interaction to carry part of the workload. The route needs direct personal survival before allies become useful.
High-variance openerYou are farming unlock knowledge or testing a known route at comfortable pressure. You are still learning first clears or pressure consistency.

Biome and Boss Route Table

Route problemDecisionWhy it works
Snow or sand slows the run downValue movement, terrain adaptation, and food pathing before greedier damage.A strong attack does not matter if the terrain decides when you can eat or leave.
Water route keeps breaking spacingChoose Fin, more reach, or a safer non-water fight path.Water pressure turns weak movement into a damage problem later.
Boss appears before the route is readyDelay if the creature lacks food, one main attack, movement, sustain, or open space.Boss prep is usually a route check, not a raw DPS check.
Alpha enemies pull the run off-planOnly route star or tracked targets when recovery is stable.Extra rewards help good routes snowball but punish routes that cannot reset safely.
An update changes map or enemy pressureDrop one pressure level and find the first job that now fails.Version 1.1 changed spawning, pressure rewards, evolutions, mid-run reference access, and several balance rules.

Raise Pressure Only after the Route Learns Its New Tool

Balance changes can move exact numbers, but the creature still needs food, movement, sustain, offense, and a boss plan. Read the current tooltip, pick the missing job, and raise pressure only after the new evolution or genetics choice fits that route.
