Pandora's Toybox Beginner Guide

Last updated: May 31, 2026 Beginner guide Beginner

On your first run, stabilize population and faith before using expensive powers. Your safest route is: read the map, grow one reliable settlement, spend faith only when it solves a concrete problem, then push the scenario objective instead of overbuilding forever.

First-Run Route

Step Priority Why it matters Do not do this
1 Pick one settlement to stabilize. A stable population gives you workers, believers, and room to recover from mistakes. Do not spread attention across every settlement before one economy is safe.
2 Build steady faith income. Faith is what lets your god choice turn into useful action. Do not spend every power immediately just because it is available.
3 Answer the biggest threat first. Heretics, resource stalls, and weak population growth each need different fixes. Do not punish blindly if conversion or support would solve the problem more safely.
4 Finish the scenario once the objective is secure. Faith Crystals and long-term growth come from completing the reward loop. Do not keep polishing a city-state after the run is already won.

What is Pandora's Toybox?

Pandora's Toybox is a fast-paced god sim sandbox with roguelite elements. You guide human civilization on generated maps, help settlements grow into city-states, spread Olympian faith, and push back against rival beliefs. The beginner mistake is treating it like a pure sandbox; the stronger approach is to play each scenario as a route toward a specific reward.

Keep these images in mind while reading the first-run advice. The early game is mostly about reading the map, watching the interface, and learning when faith pressure matters more than another quick miracle.

Beginner Priorities

  1. Stabilize population. More people means more workers, more believers, and more recovery space.
  2. Watch faith income. Faith is the resource that lets your god choices matter, so keep it growing before you rely on miracles.
  3. Use powers with a purpose. Cast when the power changes a decision, prevents a collapse, or secures the objective.
  4. React to heretics early. Rival beliefs are easier to redirect before they become the whole map's problem.
  5. Learn one god at a time. A narrow first-run plan teaches you more than swapping strategies every few minutes.

Faith Spending Rules

Treat faith like a routing resource, not a panic button. Spend it when a power creates population growth, prevents a major loss, converts pressure into progress, or finishes a scenario objective. Save it when the city-state is already stable and the power would only make the map look cleaner.

Faith always runs out. Powers are being used before the settlement can support them. Slow down, build faith income, and cast only when it changes the route. Faith Guide
Heretics spread faster than expected. Rival belief pressure was ignored until it became expensive to solve. React earlier with conversion/support tools before choosing punishment. Convert Heretics
The city looks strong but progress stalls. The run is overbuilding instead of finishing the scenario objective. Identify the win condition, secure it, then claim the reward loop. Faith Crystals
A destructive power backfires. The city-state cannot recover from the damage or instability it created. Use destructive options only when the benefit is larger than the recovery cost. Punishment and Holy War

Do not overbuild forever

If your goal is long-term progression, remember that Faith Crystals come from finishing scenarios and moving through the reward loop. A beautiful city-state is useful only if it helps you clear. Once the scenario goal is secure, finish the run and spend the rewards on permanent upgrades or god unlocks.
