Spellsided Upgrade Priority Guide

Quick Answer

Pick the upgrade that fixes the next bottleneck, not the one that sounds strongest in isolation. In Spellsided, an upgrade is good only if your current die can sequence it before the room punishes you.

Situation

Because spells, enemies, obstacles, and upgrades add layers to the dice-builder loop, reward screens can tempt you into building for a future fantasy. Slow down. Ask what the last failure proved.

You lost path control.Movement, safety, or recovery. The best spell does nothing if you cannot reach the step that casts it.The current route already has safe lanes and lacks finish pressure.
A single obstacle stopped the route.Specific answer coverage. One correct answer can unlock the whole sequence. The answer only helps one room and weakens every other job.
The room was safe but too slow.Payoff or compression.A safer plan still needs to end the problem. The payoff arrives only after several unsafe setup steps.
The route changed after one reward.Consistency over novelty.A stable die teaches you more than a flashy detour. The new spell solves the exact pressure that killed you.

Why It Works

Upgrades are route edits. If the route problem is movement, a damage upgrade may only make the future loss more frustrating. If the problem is payoff, another safety tool may make the die neat but slow. Read the bottleneck, then buy the answer.

When Not To Use It

Challenge rooms and deterministic puzzles can ask for a temporary narrow solution. If a room clearly teaches one interaction, take the lesson. Just avoid turning that one-room answer into a permanent rule for every route.

Reward Screen Pause

Before choosing, pause long enough to name what the upgrade would change in the next room. A movement upgrade should make the first unsafe step safer. An obstacle answer should remove a specific stop point. A payoff upgrade should shorten a route that already reaches its window. If you cannot say which step changes, the upgrade is probably just adding texture. This pause is especially important in a demo route because a flashy reward can hide whether you actually learned the room.

Upgrade Pairing Rule

Try to pair each upgrade with one face job. Safety upgrades belong near movement or recovery faces. Payoff upgrades belong after the route can set them up. Utility upgrades belong only if they answer a pressure you have already seen.
