Upgrade Rotwood gear by reading the failed hunt. Buy survival if you die before dealing damage, buy weapon support if fights drag, and buy co-op safety if rescues keep turning into wipes. Do not spend for a fantasy build until it fixes the next collapse.
Match the Upgrade to the Official Game Loop
The official Steam page for Rotwood puts gear upgrades, weapon choice, skill improvement, and safe-haven defense in the same hunt-to-hunt loop. Treat a purchase as a promise about the next hunt: it should either make your current weapon job repeatable, protect the run long enough to learn, or solve a pressure point that reaches the haven. A higher-looking option is not automatically a better next decision.

You lose health before the fight is readable. The choice gives room to recover, reset, or take fewer bad trades. It only adds damage to an unsafe entry. Can you reach the same threat with more room to choose an exit?
Openings pass with no useful damage. The choice supports the short punish you can already land.It needs a longer combo than the opening allows. Can you repeat one clean punish without extending into danger?
The team collapses during a rescue. It gives one player a clearer stabilizing or space-making job.It duplicates damage while no one can protect the recovery. Can the group regroup before choosing to revive?
You do not know why the last hunt failed. The purchase is a modest safety choice that keeps the next lesson visible. It starts a full rebuild with no testable reason.Did the first collapse move later, or repeat in the same place?
Upgrade Priority Table
Failure patternUpgrade directionWhyDelay
You die during normal rooms.Survivability, recovery, safer defensive support.More damage cannot help if the hunt ends early.Glass-cannon upgrades.
Bosses outlast you.Repeatable weapon damage and boss-safe support.Boss fights test stable output.Room-clear-only bonuses.
Your weapon feels clumsy.Gear that supports your actual attack rhythm.Good upgrades make habits more reliable.Upgrades for weapons you are not practicing.
Co-op rescues fail.Team safety, shared control, and recovery windows.A revived teammate is more value than one greedy hit.All players stacking the same selfish role.
Spend Around the Run Job
The official pages emphasize gear upgrades and different weapon styles, but the useful question is not simply which item is best. Ask what job the next hunt needs. A player learning boss patterns needs durability and clean punish support. A confident weapon specialist can spend more aggressively. A co-op group may need one player to stay safe enough to rescue others.
Do not let a high-rarity or flashy option break the plan. If the upgrade does not help the weapon, boss, or team role you are actually using, it is probably a detour.

Weapon planYou know the combo or punish the upgrade improves. You are buying because the number looks larger.Buy only if it supports the repeatable pattern.
Boss planThe upgrade helps a known boss problem. It only improves easy rooms.Patch the boss weakness first.
Survival bufferYou can survive mistakes long enough to learn. One hit starts a collapse.Prioritize defense or recovery.
Team roleThe group benefits from your upgrade direction.Everyone duplicates damage and no one stabilizes.Fill the missing role.
Spend, Hold, or Pivot Gate
Do not spend because a choice looks exciting. Spend after naming the failed layer. If the last hunt failed in normal rooms, boss punish windows, co-op recovery, or weapon rhythm, the upgrade should answer that layer first.
Last failureSpendHoldPivot only if
Normal rooms drain health.Buy survival, recovery, or support for safer entries.Hold greedier damage until rooms stop costing too much health. The same first-room trade keeps happening after safer entries.
Boss openings pass with little damage.Support the punish window you can repeat.Hold broad utility if it does not help that window. The weapon cannot land even the short punish safely.
Co-op rescues start wipes.Spend toward the role that preserves space or survives pressure.Hold duplicate damage if no one can stabilize the room. The team keeps lacking the same missing role after callouts.
The build feels strong but inconsistent.Patch the reset or mistake-tolerance gap.Hold a full rebuild until the failure repeats under controlled tests.Entry, punish, and reset all fail for the current direction.

Before spending the next upgrade
Spend like you are fixing the run you just lost, not decorating the run you wish you had. If bosses kill you after one panic trade, buy consistency. If rooms drag forever while you stay safe, buy damage. The best upgrade is the one that changes the next failure.
